Join is on a hunt for the "Rainbow of the Night" - the Aurora Borealis!
The symbols of the Aurora Borealis were found on the Shamans’ drums of the Sami population. In their language, the phenomenon has many different names, for example, Sami traditionally ... moreassociate the Aurora Borealis with sounds. During the Viking era, the Aurora Borealis were thought to be the armour of the Valkyrie, the virgin warriors, which gave off the strange sparkling light.

We like to call it “The Rainbow of the Night” because sometimes the lights appear all at once, dancing through the sky in shades of purple, orange, green and red.
The Aurora Borealis is always different, and to see it is an exciting, magical moment..With the excursion we propose, you’ll become spectators of one of the most incredible phenomenon of our planet.
During our safari, we will walk among silent forests, frozen lakes and old fishing hamlets.

We will try to find the best spots to admire the “Queen”, the Aurora Borealis and, according to the solar activity, we will change place and point of observation. That is why we call this excursion “hunting the lights”. The excursion itself will be an enchanting experience and when your desire to observe the inspiring northern lights will be fulfilled , you will understand why then aurora, nordlys in Norwegian, is considered the most incredible natural phenomenon you can assist.

We have two options:

Observing Northern lights

This excursion is for those who want to enjoy the beauty of the Northern Lights without stress. We will drive you to the nice and picturesque village of Kabelvåg. Kabelvåg is a perfect place for a good observation because of its particular position. In this nice place there is also a very old and typical norwegian pub where we will warm up during our waiting, enjoying a norwegian coffe and a good atmosphere.

English speaking guide at your disposal. Other languages on request.
Warm drinks and typical norwegian biscuits during the whole excursion.

Chasing the lights

This is a very dynamic excursion perfect for those who want to “chase” the Northern Lights. Our guide will drive you all along the archipelago searching for them. This tour is a very Arctic experience and you will be a part of it. You won’t be just a simple spectator, but an active part of this hunting. You will get the best reward you could desire, a magnificent Northern Lights!
Don’t forget to bring with you warm clothes.
English speaking guide during the trip. Other languages on request.
Warm drinks and typical norwegian biscuits during the whole excursion.

Private Aurora chasing - max 4 people

A private driver and a private knowledgeable guide will be at your disposal during the whole trip, so you will get a full package of experiences and knowledge. You will learn how to take wonderful shots of the Queen of the Arctic, how to use your tripod properly and how to set up the camera. The duration is about 5 hours. A comfortable car or minivan will drive you where there there is the best chance to admire and take pictures of the magic northern lights. With a 7 hours private tour you will have an unforgettable experience. The guide will introduce you to the mystery of the northern lights and the impact they have had for centuries on local populations, scientists and philosophers. The driver/photographer will teach you how to take the best pictures of the northern lights giving you all the necessary photography tips and knowledge. He will teach you how to use your tripod and how to set up you camera, so you will learn how to maximize your skills for taking stunning pictures of one of the most amazing natural phenomenons.

As far up from the River Karasjoka as you can hear a dog barking is the Haldecohkka (the Halde top). From this holy mountain you enjoy a 360 degree view of the sky, making it a perfect ... moreplace to experience the magical Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis).
During the approximately 4 hours we spend outdoors, your guide will tell you about the Northern Lights in Sámi and Norwegian culture and also the science behind this phenomenon.... more

"Everything and everyone has its own háldi. Every human, every animal, every forest and every lake. Everything has its háldi".

In the old Sámi religion and culture, people believed that Háldis lived under ground, often in certain mountains. If a mountain is called Halde, Háldi, Haldde or Halldo it means that this is a holy place where Háldis lives.

We start our northern light safari at the Engholm Husky Lodge just outside Karasjok. You will be handed out a pair of snowshoes and with these simple aids the 1,5 kilometre hike to the Halde top will be easy. Up here are no disturbing lights and you can enjoy the full view either sitting on a reindeer skin by the warming fire or sitting alone in the darkness with a nice hot drink, just listening to Aurora.

…And who knows, maybe you will meet your own Háldi out there.

Remember:

Aurora is a strange woman and she does not always show up. For her to show herself there needs to be a clear sky, there must be the right kind of activity on the suns surface and we need to be there when she shows herself. Therefore we cannot guarantee that we will see her every time.

First timer or experienced skier, this cross-country skiing expedition trip presents an unforgettable experience for any adventure-minded nature lover.... more

On this expedition trip we ski with dogs and pulks (sleds) from outside the town Alta, southeast, across the Finnmark Plateau to Karasjok in the heartland of the Norwegian Sami culture. We sleep in mountain cabins and tents and most of the trip will be of trails.

The highlights of this trip are the silence, a true wilderness experience and the Northern Lights (not guaranteed)

Warning: An adventure like this can be adictive.
From late March to early May is probably the best time to see the Finnmark Plateau. The dark polar night is over and the light returns with higher temperatures and longer days. The ... moreskiing conditions are normally excellent, making it easy to get to almost anywhere you want to go. The weather is often good and the ice fishing gets better every day.

We leave the hustle and bustle of civilization behind and we focus on making this a stress free outdoor experience. Every day brings new scenery as we ski across wide open plateaus, over hills and around mountains. We take the time to enjoy the environment and to make our tent camps as comfortable as possible. On our way we will also try ice fishing. Your very experienced guide will make sure safety is taken care of at all times.

We will be cross-country skiing the whole way and we transport everything we need in pulks and backpacks. Dogs will help us pull some of the equipment. These happy, social and hardworking Alaska Huskies give the trip an added social dimension. Your guide will show you how to handle the dogs in the best way possible. Our daily skiing distance is between 4 and 15 kilometers. Total distance is approx. 80 km.

The terrain is open, flat and easy to ski across. The weather is normally good with cold nights and "mild" sunny days. The Arctic weather, however, can sometimes present some challenges. But do not worry! Your guides are highly professional and have years of experience in this environment, he/she will make sure you are well taken care of in any situation. On this trip we focus on comfort, good food and, as with all Turgleder trips, safety.

You do not have to be an experienced cross-country skier to do this trip. Several first time skiers have already done it. However, if you wish to learn the basics of skiing or improve your cross-country skiing skills before you go, we can offer you a skiing instruction program at 10am in Alta, day one of the expedition. A reasonable level of fitness is necessary and some outdoor experience is helpful.

The American travel publiation Forbes Travel Guide has ranked the skiing trip on the Finnmark Plateau to be one of the 5 most stunning cross country skiing spots in the world.

Detail Intinerary
Day 1
Arrival in Alta. Your guide will meet you at Alta Airport at 6 or 7pm or in Alta city and take you to a local guesthouse/cabin where you will stay the first night. You will be served dinner and your guide will go through the program for the trip and the exact skiing route with you. Your guide will also go through your personal outdoor equipment to make sure everybody has brought everything they need for the trip and that the equipment meets the standards that the Arctic environment requires.

Day 2
After breakfast we will do the last preparations and there will be time for some last minute shopping before we travel to the mountains where the trip starts. We start of easy on the first day with skiing only approximately 4 kilometers to the Jotka Mountain Cabin. Here you will be served dinner and stay for the night. In the afternoon you will be teamed up with 1 or 2 other people with whom you will work together and share a tent during the trip. You will also be shown how to put up your tent and how to use some of the equipment that you will be using on the trip. There will also be time to make your final personal preparations and adjustments before the journey across the Finnmark Plateau starts. The guide will also go through safety routines, skiing routines and how to handle the dogs in the best way possible.

Day 3
After breakfast the trip starts. Alaska Huskies will help us pull some of the equipment. You will be surprised to see how much these dogs love to work. We will be skiing half of the day on tracks and the rest of the day off tracks. This evening will be the first night in tents. We will now be well on our way and the landscape will be quite flat and mostly treeless.

Day 4
A new day on skis. The next camp will be set up by a good fishing lake and the rest of the day can be spent fishing on the ice if we arrive early. The lakes along our skiing route have mostly Arctic char, Brown trout and grayling. With some luck, we will catch some that we can prepare for dinner.

Day 5
The day starts slowly and if you like you can try some fishing again before lunch. After lunch we pack our camp and we ski the rest of the day before we make camp again.

Day 6
The first kilometers will be in gentle uphill terrain before we reach the highest point on the trip. Here you can enjoy a fabulous view and there will be time to take out your camera before we continue. We will be skiing a few more kilometers before we make camp for the night.

Day 7
During this day we will be going from the barren mountains down into the forest. We spend this night at Ravnastua mountain cabin. This mountain cabin has a basic standard with no shower facilities. It is heated with wood burners and there are no televisions or other things to disturb the cozy and relaxed atmosphere. You will be sharing a room with your trip mates.

Day 8
We will be skiing the rest of the way to Engholm Husky Lodge. The 15 kilometers will be on tracks and mostly downhill. After our arrival at the lodge we will gather in the lodge kitchen and dinner will be served in the warm and cozy lodge atmosphere. A nice wood heated sauna and outdoor hot tub is ready on request for those tempted.

Day 9
Breakfast and journey home.

The Rough Guide has also honored our trip as one of "Top 20 animal encounters" and it is mentioned in Rough Guides- book ”Clean Breaks – 500 new ways to see the world” from 2009.

The journey starts in the heart land of the Sámi culture and ends further north by the arctic coast, where the reindeers have their summer grazing area and where they give birth to a new generation. You will be taking part in the daily work and learn how the Sámis herd their reindeer herds. Taking part in the migration means you will be travelling with the Sámis, like the Sámis. You will be eating and sleeping like a Sámi herder. Your participation means that you will be living close to the reindeer and experience the old nomadic life of the Sámi people. You will be put to work when necessary leading the herd across the ancient and desolate Finnmark Plateau by snow mobile. You will be sleeping in a lavvu (Sámi tent) and you will be served traditional Sámi food.

In the middle of April it is light almost 24 hours a day, the snow has started melting and there are some good opportunities for ice fishing on the numerous lakes we pass by.

If you do not have time for the whole migration you can join us on a day trip, "Reindeer herder experience".

The Finnmark Plateau – the name alone brings to mind images of grand nature and magnificent experiences for many European adventurers. The endless rolling terrain, the Northern Lights ... moreand the silence will always make a deep and lasting impression on those who see it.

This is the long way across the Finnmark Plateau at the coldest time of the year. The low temperatures, the changing snow conditions, the few hours of daylight and no other people in sight makes this an Arctic challenge for the true adventurers and explorers.

-And the reward; images of magnificent untouched nature forever burned into your memory, the indescribable Arctic light, a relaxed mind and the rewarding feeling of having done one of the toughest Arctic challenges available in mainland Scandinavia.

Warning: An adventure like this can be adictive.
With this tour you get the opportunity to test yourself and your equipment. You can gain valuable expedition experience before going to Greenland, Antarctica or to the North Pole. ... moreThe program is 17 days and starts around mid-February. This is the coldest period of the year and the light is stunning.

If you have no other expedition or tour plans, this tour has so much to offer in itself. Your mind changes mode when you are out beyond 8 or 9 days without contact with civilization. The white landscape, the silence and the meditative motions of cross country skiing will give you plenty of time to reflect, philosophise and day dream along the way. Many people find themselves in a very balanced, relaxed and harmonic state of mind after a trip like this.
But be aware; this feeling can in some cases lead to a life long addiction for long duration outdoor adventures!

This expedition holiday is suitable for adventurous people with strength of will and a can-do attitude. It requires a good level of fitness and previous camping and outdoor experience.

The route goes from north to south and ends up in Karasjok, the Norwegian Sami capital. We will be skiing the whole way transporting our equipment in pulks and back packs. Almost the entire route will be off track and our daily skiing distances will be between 7 and 22km. Total distance will be between 160- 210 km, depending on our starting point, which will be decided based on group size and composition, weather forecast, snow conditions and other factors that might influence us during the trip.
In Karasjok we will stay at Engholm Husky Lodge.

We will be skiing during the coldest period of the year when the temperature can drop to below -40°c and the weather can vary from clear blue skies with no wind to storms or blizzards. This will challenge you both physically and mentally, but it will also bring forward friendship, character, cooperation, grand nature experiences and a wilderness feeling that few other places in Europe can offer.

The guides on the expedition are very experienced and highly qualified for this type of expedition. Their most important task and their main focus will be making this the best possible experience for you.

The American travel publiation Forbes Travel Guide has ranked the skiing trip on the Finnmark Plateau to be one of the 5 most stunning cross country skiing spots in the world.

Feel the pleasure of spending time in the wilderness and the rewarding feeling of coming back indoors after having spent a night out in the fresh air. Do as the boy scouts and girl ... morescouts and sleep under the open sky, on branches under a lean-to or maybe even in a snow pit, depending on the time of the year and the weather conditions.

This is a great opportunity to do something new or to refresh your old boy scout or girl scout skills. As in all scout camps, good food and stories by the camp fire are a natural part of the experience.

It is a good chance to see the northern lights on this trip!
This is an excellent multi-generation holiday experience where grandparents and grandchildren can do something together and can learn from each other.... more

We leave before noon and we go to the best suited place according to the weather conditions. We can go to the lowland forest or to the mountains. You will be walking on your feet, with skis or snow shoes according to what is best. At the camp site we start preparing for the night by making it as comfortable as possible and, in old scout tradition, we of course make a camp fire. There will be time to explore the nature by short short excursions or to sit in silent contemplation around the fire. The good stories often come out around the fire in the evening. You will be sleeping on nice and warm reindeer skins and all meals are eaten around the fire.

The next day we have breakfast around the fire before we take down the camp and prepare to leave. When everything is ready we head back to civilization.

On this trip you can harvest experience under skilled guidance and in safe conditions. This is a "slow trip" suitable for all generations where you can lower your shoulders and experience the comfortable silence of a night in the wild.
