What to bring on this excursion
Clothing during skiing: It’s an active excursion so don’t dress too warm, but bring an extra layer for when standing still! It’s best to have clothing that dries up quickly, so avoid cotton if possible! Wool and polyester (often seen in sport specific clothing) are best. Dressing in many layers is recommended over having one thick layer. This provides better insulation and it’s easier to take off one layer when you’re too warm. See list:

We paddle from the last outpost of civilization into the crystal-clear waters of the Bjurälven river. The silent movement forward allows for close encounters with the mystical beaver. ... moreIt’s a four-hour tour of paddling and safari, containing a “fika” stop, in the untouched nature of a large nature reserve. In Bjurälven we have the oldest family of beavers in Sweden. The wilderness of Bjurälven Nature Reserve has, since their arrival in 1921, become a real beaver paradise with excellent chances to see them. But this tour is not like any other beaver safari – it’s a wilderness experience in an area completely uninhabited and untouched by humans.
We meet at the farm Leipikvattnet, from where we walk down to the lake to start our canoe trip. After about a kilometre of canoeing along the shore we get to Bjurälvens outlet, where ... morethe water is almost always calm. Time to lower our voices – we are near the beaver’s lodge.

This river has a special relationship to beavers, for it was here the first beavers where relocated in 1921 after having been extinct in Sweden. It is an extraordinary story of two Norwegian beavers who were moved from Norway, wintered in Stockholm and then were transported all the way to Bjurälven by more than 6 month of transportation!

We keep on paddling upstream and watch the rich mountain vegetation along the riverbank. The guides tell you about beavers as they are helping you with your paddling. There are traces everywhere! Keep your eyes open, beavers can appear as suddenly as they disappear.

When we have gone as far upstream as possible, we have snacks and refreshments made from local products. With new energy, we follow the river back to the lake and the farm. It is often on the way back, transported by the current, that we see the most beavers.

Although we cannot promise that you will see any beavers, we have seen them almost every time we paddled in Bjurälven since the summer of 2014.

Korallgrottan has over 6 kilometres of cave passages winding their way through the dark. For safety reasons the cave is locked and can only be visited in the company of a Vilseledaren ... moreguide.
The cave was discovered as recent as 1985 and the guided tours began in 1987. Since then, only the locked iron gates has been added, leaving the whole cave in its natural state. A tour in Korallgrottan is a real adventure with crawling and climbing in an untouched environment.
We meet at the parking space in Ankarvattnet. From there it is four kilometres of hiking on boardwalks leading through a wild mountain spruce and birch forest.... more

Suddenly we see how the landscape is changing. We enter a stretch of limestone bedrock and see a doline, a sign that something is happening underground. The thrill of exploration kicks in as we find our way forward. Soon we arrive at one of the cave entrances, a huge crater where the stream disappears underground. We feel our curiosity pulling us toward the opening.

Luxury coffee break before crawling
Once we arrive at the small cabin near the cave we have a coffee break with snacks consisting of locally produced delicacies before putting on the caving equipment. On the forest edge there is an outdoor toilet, a fireplace and fresh, drinkable, spring water. You can leave any valuables in a locked room.

Caving in narrow passages or large halls
Now it is time to enter the cave. For two hours we are disconnected from the outside world, experiencing complete darkness and the sense of stillness, combined with the thrill of exploring the unknown.

We pass unique formations formed by the cave such as “cave bacon”, “corals” and ancient stalactites, crawling through narrow passages and walking in gigantic halls. Depending on the season we pass masses of ice or dry rock. The way forward is determined by the group’s physical capabilities and daring. Do you have what it takes to crawl into “the Speaking pipe” or through “the Well”?

After two hours, we catch a glimpse of light coming from the crater and we are back in the daylight. Take the opportunity to take a refreshing shower in the waterfall!

The history of this area reaches 4.5 million years back in time, far back to a prehistoric ocean. On the floor of that ocean, the limestone forming the bed rock of Bjurälven was created. ... moreToday, the water turns the bedrock into the formations that enchants and entices most people visiting the area.
The nature reserves Bjurälven and Korallgrottan represent Sweden’s most characteristic karst landscape.
We meet at the farm Leipikvattnet, from where we hike three kilometres before reaching the karst landscape. On our way, we learn much about the flora and history of this area. At the ... moreend of our hike, we reach a small shelter, where we stop for a short rest with coffee and some snacks before entering the karst area. Now the adventure begins!

During the day we see dolines, sinkholes and siphons where the river disappears underground and shows up in different places. We enjoy our packed lunch and listen to the guide talking about the area’s unique geology and fantastic flora. We continue walking through the “Blind Valley” to Bjurälvsgrottan and pass both the ice cave and the snow dolines, before we return to Leipikvattnet. The trail contains footbridges and steep sections prepared with stairs. The tour can be tailored to the group’s abilities and preferences.

A fantastic and unparalleled hike!
