Country:
Norway
Ski Touring has exploded in popularity in Norway recent years. First locals discovered these great opportunities in their own backyard and now adventure travelers have. But ski touring ... morein Norway is not for everyone. The mountains are steep and the weather is changing. You better get a guide.

Let us help you out, send a request today.

Just tell us how you like it, and get quotes to your inbox.
We´ll find what suits you best, whether you want to join a small group or have a private tour.

Popular areas:

1 The Svalbard Islands
While Svalbard is remote and wild it is still easily accessible. Located between 74 and 81 degrees North, Spitsbergen and Svalbard is probably one of the most exotic skiing adventures you´ll find. Because of the light the best season is May-June. It´ll be a little different experience because of the armed guide protecting you from polar bears. And the transport to starting point will be by snow mobile or boat. The locals are welcoming and you will have a great time even when your not skiing.

2 The Alta region in Finnmark
One of the best starting points for your Alta skiing experience is Langfjordbotn. Located deep in the end of Langfjorden you´re surrounded by numerous mountains, and the best thing is that there is very few people around. You leave your own tracks both up and down. The mountain heights are suitable for day trips. There are not many local guides in Langfjordbotn, you´ll have to find them in nearby Alta.

3 Tromsø and Lyngenfjord
Lyngen, a short trip from Tromsø, is one of the best known and most popular back country skiing destinations in Norway. Often crowded, but not like in the States or Central Europe. This area has so many mountains and possibilities, so you can easily be by yourself. Be sure to book a local known guide here. There has been some accidents and avalanches in the later years.

4 The Lofoten and Vesterålen Islands
In our opinion Lofoten and Vesterålen is one of the most beautiful places on earth. (We´ve been around, but of course not everywhere :) Steep mountains and a full panorama sea view makes the area very special for skiing. Because you have the ocean all around and rough weather conditions, it can be hard to know and understand where the snow is safer and better. We highly recommend a local guide here. You can stay at places like Hattvika Lodge or Svinøya Rorbuer, they will help you out.

5 The Bodø region
Bodø is the northernmost stop for the Norwegian railway. Just above the polar circle you have many steep and beautiful mountains around. This is not the best known backcountry ski touring area in Norway yet, but it´s popularity is highly increasing as people discover the endless possibilties and stunning beauty here. For example Beiarn an Meløy is on the bucket list for many Norway enthusiasts.

6 The Helgeland Coast
This stretch actually starts in Bodø, but a trip down this coastline in search of snow and mountains might be the best decision you´ll ever make. Actually you can´t really call it a search. You have majestetic mountains all around. There are many villages and towns for you to stay in. We can recommend the area around the cities of Sandnessjøen, Mo i Rana and Brønnøysund towards Bindalen.

7 The Sunndalsfjella mountain range
This is the area for the hardcore mountain lovers. It actually suits everyone, but mountains are steeper and higher than further north. A typical ascant can be 1500 meters and the reward is stunning views. In Øksendalen you can stay at Phillipshaugen Lodge. A great location and run by avid skiers. Other places of interest are Virumsdalen/ Innerdalen and Jordalsgrenda.

8 The Romsdal Alps
The base for exploring Romsdalen are Åndalsnes and Isfjorden. In this area you can go to Vengedalen, Isfjorden, Innfjorden and many other great mountains. Go there by train from Oslo, or fly to Molde. Stay in ski lodges like Villa Vengetind, Romsdal Lodge or Hotell Aak. Kirketaket and Kjøvsgardstind are the best known summits here, but check out Skjervan, Middagstind, Nonstind, Hesten, Blånebba, Gjuratind and Smørbottentind as well as Store Trolltind. We promise they will all blow you away.

9 The Sunnmøre Alps
The Ålesund region with Strandafjellet and Hjørundfjorden was for decades a secret paradise, serving local ski enthusiasts and travellers in search of unique experiences. In the last five years the area has faced a revolution as a movie location, and because of new concepts and a new professionalism making the area famous far beyond Norwegian borders. The development of Strandafjellet, Norway´s best free ride resort and new routes like Hjørundfjorden Haute Route have been a big part of that. The area is very popular for skiing and sailing concepts.

10 Jotunheimen
The Jotunheimen mountain range is home to Norway´s highest peaks like Galdhøpiggen, Glittertind and Store Skagastølstind. In the inner parts of Sognefjorden you find the famous hotel Turtagrø, and it´s a good base for skiing in mountains higher than 2000 meters above sea level. Another great base to start is Spiterstulen close to Lom. There´s been established a route called Jotunheimen Haute Route, going from cabin to cabin, with great rides and summits along the way.

After the first day it´s possible to hang out in the Sauna with a cold Slogen beer from the brewery on the opposite side of the fjord. You can eat dinner at the hotel or on any of the two other restaurants in the village.

Join us for a 7 days ski tour adventure between fjords and peaks – around the Sunnmøre alps fjord nr 1: Hjørundfjorden. The trip goes around the heart of Sunnmøre and could be compared ... morewith Haute Route. The mountains aroung Hjørundfjorden are as wild as them in the alps, but instead of headache and crowding in the alps, we offer you fresh sea air, fjordviews and untracked snow!
Hjørundfjorden is 33 km long and surrounded by sharp peaks and well know ski touring mountains around 1500 masl on each side. During a week we travel around the fjord – over peaks ... moreand down in valleys – every day close to the fjord. We will ski both classic runs and more unknown summits, therefor even thoose who have been in the area have the possibilities to get some new runs. The exact route depends on the weather and snowconditions. Some days we’re going to run short distances by car or boat. This, and if we can run down to the fjord, also depends on snow conditions.

Itinerary
Day 1 - Hundeidvik-Trandal
First days trip goes from Hundeidvik in the north eastern end of the bay to Trandal, a roadless village built about halfway into the fjord. The trip to Trandal goes via Blåbretind and we get great skiing down to Trandal. In Trandal only six people lives, but they have a pub there ! We are spending the night at Christian Gaard right beside the fjord. Christian Gaard hosts the Trandal Blues every summer.

Day 2 - Trandal-Urke
From Trandal trip goes via Lisjedalen to Urkedal. Here we have alternative summits in several directions and can choose according to the circumstances. Down in Urke we live in a beautiful house with a view to Norangsfjorden – arm of Hjørundfjorden that goes into the Øye. Here the guide will make the dinner, but everything is planned and the ingredients are ready.

Day 3 - Urke-Villa Norangdal via Slogen
This day we will climb Slogen and hope to have conditions for it! Slogen is the best known and prominent mountains in Sunnmøre, but for many it is unknown for skitouring because it looks so steep and inaccessible. We are one of the finest route, via Langesæterdalen from Urke. From the foot of the Slogen we follow more or less the summer route up. This section of the tour is steep and exposed and it is usual to go up with skis on the back. We choose the return down to Norangsdalen and get a ride into the valley to Villa Norangdal – A design gem of a hotel where each room representing a different decade. Here both Patchell and Slingsby worn stairs ! If the dinner at that time could compare with what they offer here today we don´t know, but for sure they didn´t have warm outdoor tub! Perfect after three days and several thousand meters of skiing!

Day 4 - Villa Norangdal – Bjørke
One of the most popular ski trips in the area starts here on the steps of Villa Norangdal! We exploits that and hope that the weather is on our side and give us the views of Hjørundfjorden that we deserve. Via Blæja and Kårdalstindane we ski down to the shore on the other side and down to Bjørke, innermost of Hjørundfjorden.

Day 5 - Bjørke – Sæbø
Where we go this day depends on weather and snowconditions, but one of the alternative is the Sunnmøre-classic Skårasalen. We´ll go up on the westside of the mountain and ski down the valley Lisje skårasalen down to the roadless yard Skår. Here´s just 1 person living! We take ferry over to Saebo and spend the night at Saga Fjord Hotel beside the fjord.

Day 6
This day we have options as Dalegubben and Sylvkallen both have beautiful skiing and breathtaking views towards Hjørundfjorden. Depending on the mountain we choose, we maybe need ice axe and crampons. Down in the valley Standal we sleep in Standal Alpecenter.

Day 7 - Standal – Ytre Standal = finish!
This day we can ski classic Kolåstinden or one of the peaks closer Molladalen. This area have particularly sharp peaks, and the view is excellent! Where we meet dryland we take taxi back to the ferry port at Festøy.

UNIQUE LODGING
Around Hjørundfjorden are there a number of special accomodations , some of them do we use along the way. Since we use these accommodations we don´t carry with us more food than we need during the day. This will also get our backpacks lighter so that they do not hinder the great skiing! This mountains are our “home-mountains” in Uteguiden. That´s your guarantee of the finest runs! Our tours contains the experience , safety and learning during the week. We are confident that this particular trip whets your appetite at Sunnmøre! Hjørundfjorden around is unique as the only round trip skiing in Norway.

SAFETY FIRST
As the first company in Norway we now offer rental of avalanche backpacks for all our customers. If you ever get caught in an avalanche an avalanche backpack is the only thing that can increase the chance of survival. Our guide don´t take bigger risks because of these backpacks but we want to offer you all the safety-nets available on the market.

To ski in this environment provides a good mix of mountain and sea that will affect you for a long, long time. Once in the Lofoten - and you're doomed to this place! The combination of sea, mountains, snow / ice make these islands one of the most unique ski destinations on the planet.

Travelling across a white, snow-covered landscape will give you new experiences even in a well-known area.

Cross-country skiing is a clean, easy and wonderful way to travel through the Arctic outdoors. The snow and ice gives you the opportunity to travel across obstacles like lakes, marshes and scree as if they were not even there. Cross-country (or back-country skiing) is easy to learn. However, your learning curve will be much steeper with some instruction rather than struggling on your own.

There is no set itinerary for this course. However, we will touch on the issues you need to get started like, for example, waxing and skiing technique (uphill, downhill and flat).

Emphasis will be on skiing technique and balance and the whole course will be adapted to the your individual needs.

Please note: This course will only teach you skiing skills and will not include techniques for living outdoors on multiple day skiing trips.

Who better to show you the hidden gems, far away from the reach of tourists, than local guides and skiing enthusiasts?
Ski touring in the backcountry has the best of all good mountain trips. Imagine long, untouched, deep powder runs, over 1000m straight down to the fjord, without another skier in sight. ... moreThe mountains of Nordland are a skiers dream come true, offering a huge range of backcountry skiing options, all with spectacular views.
You are out, far away from people, surrounded by stunning nature, walking up to the summit and breathing in the silence. Then, it is shattered by the wind blowing through your hair as you speed down the slope, carving through the trackless snow, until you pull up next to the car, with the adrenaline pumping through your veins.

Whether Randonee or Telemark is your thing, you will love the mountains of Glomfjord and Svartisen. Enjoy every turn as you soak in the sights, and the silence of these beautiful surroundings. Working for every meter of height makes the downward run so much sweeter and rewarding.

First timer or experienced skier, this cross-country skiing expedition trip presents an unforgettable experience for any adventure-minded nature lover.... more

On this expedition trip we ski with dogs and pulks (sleds) from outside the town Alta, southeast, across the Finnmark Plateau to Karasjok in the heartland of the Norwegian Sami culture. We sleep in mountain cabins and tents and most of the trip will be of trails.

The highlights of this trip are the silence, a true wilderness experience and the Northern Lights (not guaranteed)

Warning: An adventure like this can be adictive.
From late March to early May is probably the best time to see the Finnmark Plateau. The dark polar night is over and the light returns with higher temperatures and longer days. The ... moreskiing conditions are normally excellent, making it easy to get to almost anywhere you want to go. The weather is often good and the ice fishing gets better every day.

We leave the hustle and bustle of civilization behind and we focus on making this a stress free outdoor experience. Every day brings new scenery as we ski across wide open plateaus, over hills and around mountains. We take the time to enjoy the environment and to make our tent camps as comfortable as possible. On our way we will also try ice fishing. Your very experienced guide will make sure safety is taken care of at all times.

We will be cross-country skiing the whole way and we transport everything we need in pulks and backpacks. Dogs will help us pull some of the equipment. These happy, social and hardworking Alaska Huskies give the trip an added social dimension. Your guide will show you how to handle the dogs in the best way possible. Our daily skiing distance is between 4 and 15 kilometers. Total distance is approx. 80 km.

The terrain is open, flat and easy to ski across. The weather is normally good with cold nights and "mild" sunny days. The Arctic weather, however, can sometimes present some challenges. But do not worry! Your guides are highly professional and have years of experience in this environment, he/she will make sure you are well taken care of in any situation. On this trip we focus on comfort, good food and, as with all Turgleder trips, safety.

You do not have to be an experienced cross-country skier to do this trip. Several first time skiers have already done it. However, if you wish to learn the basics of skiing or improve your cross-country skiing skills before you go, we can offer you a skiing instruction program at 10am in Alta, day one of the expedition. A reasonable level of fitness is necessary and some outdoor experience is helpful.

The American travel publiation Forbes Travel Guide has ranked the skiing trip on the Finnmark Plateau to be one of the 5 most stunning cross country skiing spots in the world.

Detail Intinerary
Day 1
Arrival in Alta. Your guide will meet you at Alta Airport at 6 or 7pm or in Alta city and take you to a local guesthouse/cabin where you will stay the first night. You will be served dinner and your guide will go through the program for the trip and the exact skiing route with you. Your guide will also go through your personal outdoor equipment to make sure everybody has brought everything they need for the trip and that the equipment meets the standards that the Arctic environment requires.

Day 2
After breakfast we will do the last preparations and there will be time for some last minute shopping before we travel to the mountains where the trip starts. We start of easy on the first day with skiing only approximately 4 kilometers to the Jotka Mountain Cabin. Here you will be served dinner and stay for the night. In the afternoon you will be teamed up with 1 or 2 other people with whom you will work together and share a tent during the trip. You will also be shown how to put up your tent and how to use some of the equipment that you will be using on the trip. There will also be time to make your final personal preparations and adjustments before the journey across the Finnmark Plateau starts. The guide will also go through safety routines, skiing routines and how to handle the dogs in the best way possible.

Day 3
After breakfast the trip starts. Alaska Huskies will help us pull some of the equipment. You will be surprised to see how much these dogs love to work. We will be skiing half of the day on tracks and the rest of the day off tracks. This evening will be the first night in tents. We will now be well on our way and the landscape will be quite flat and mostly treeless.

Day 4
A new day on skis. The next camp will be set up by a good fishing lake and the rest of the day can be spent fishing on the ice if we arrive early. The lakes along our skiing route have mostly Arctic char, Brown trout and grayling. With some luck, we will catch some that we can prepare for dinner.

Day 5
The day starts slowly and if you like you can try some fishing again before lunch. After lunch we pack our camp and we ski the rest of the day before we make camp again.

Day 6
The first kilometers will be in gentle uphill terrain before we reach the highest point on the trip. Here you can enjoy a fabulous view and there will be time to take out your camera before we continue. We will be skiing a few more kilometers before we make camp for the night.

Day 7
During this day we will be going from the barren mountains down into the forest. We spend this night at Ravnastua mountain cabin. This mountain cabin has a basic standard with no shower facilities. It is heated with wood burners and there are no televisions or other things to disturb the cozy and relaxed atmosphere. You will be sharing a room with your trip mates.

Day 8
We will be skiing the rest of the way to Engholm Husky Lodge. The 15 kilometers will be on tracks and mostly downhill. After our arrival at the lodge we will gather in the lodge kitchen and dinner will be served in the warm and cozy lodge atmosphere. A nice wood heated sauna and outdoor hot tub is ready on request for those tempted.

Day 9
Breakfast and journey home.

A High Arctic wilderness adventure. This 10 days expedition program will give you some of the biggest highlights of Spitsbergen;... more

Untouched and unspoiled high arctic wilderness
Camping in polar bear territory
Ski trekking on sea ice and glaciers
Sea rafting across fjords
Glaciers
Mountains and mountain passes
The remote mining town of Longyearbyen

You do not need to be an experienced cross country skier to be a part of this adventure. First time skiers with the right mind set will have no problem with completing the tour. However,
a reasonable level of fitness is required and some outdoor and camping experience is helpful
Svalbard and Spitsbergen, names that smell of adventure! This is the wilderness where great men like Nansen, Amundsen, Nobile and Andreé spent time and effort in their quest for being ... morethe first to reach the North Pole. The archipelago was discovered at the end of the 16th century by Dutch navigator and explorer Wilhelm Barentsz. He named it Spitzbergen on account of the pointy peaks on the west coast of the island. The name Svalbard comes from the Icelandic saga´s and means Cold coasts. Today Svalbard is the name used for the entire high arctic archipelago, whereas Spitsbergen refers to the main island of the archipeago.

There is no other way of putting it: This is a full-on skiing expedition! In terms of nature and wilderness it is almost an all inclusive tour.

The program starts in Longyearbyen where final preparations are made before we leave. Our first stage of the expedition is to get from Longyearbyen across Isfjorden by fast open boats. They will take us as far as they can, at which point they will leave us on the sea ice and our expedition really begins. From there on we are alone. We ski across the rest of the fjord on the sea ice. After we reach land we start skiing up one of the many glaciers in the area. During the following days we will be skiing among glaciers and mountain tops that can be seen protruding out of the glaciers. Maybe we will even summit one of the mountain tops. Camps will be chosen based on weather, progress, or certain wishes from the expedition members. Our focus will be on making this a stress free adventure with comfortable camps and good “expedition food”. Your highly experienced guide will make sure safety is a priorotiy at all times.

We will be cross-country skiing the whole way and we will transport everything we need in pulks (sleds) and backpacks. Dogs will help us pull some of the equipment. These happy, social and hardworking Alaska Huskies give the trip an added social dimension. Your guide will show you how to handle the dogs in the best way possible. Our daily skiing distance is between 10 and 20 kilometers. Total distance is approx. 100 km.

The terrain is wide, flat and easy to ski across. The weather is normally good with cold nights and "mild" sunny days. The Arctic environment, however, can sometimes present some challenges. But do not worry. Your guide(s) are highly professional and have years of experience in this environment, he/she will make sure you are well taken care of in any situation.

The departure date is set late in spring, this means that we will have full midnight sun on the entire trip. This means that we can leave our timepieces at home, and hike, eat and sleep when we feel like it. This is real freedom. The late spring departure also ensures we will have fairly mild temperatures and more stable weather conditions compared to an earlier spring departure. Temperatures are often around -5°c in the daytime and a bit lower at night, but high on the plateau we can also experience -20°c. We are always careful about putting up camp because even at this time of the year, Svalbard weather can change very fast. One day can be windy and overcast and the next can be calm with a full sun beating down on us. As a guest on this trip (as with all Turgleder trips) you are considered a member of an expedition and you will be asked to help out when it comes to putting up a good and comfortable winter campsite. Your guides will, of course, teach you everything you need to know, from the basics to their very own “secret” tricks-of-the-trade.

The trip starts out in the same way the old explorers started their expeditions. With transport in small boats. These will take us to the fast ice in the fjords and straight into the wilderness. The boats will leave us there and as soon as the noise disappears, we are alone. Very few people travel to this area every year and for the next week the only sounds you can expect are the ones made by us or the sounds that come from nature itself. On this trip we will hike from the sea ice in the Ymer bay, where we hope to spot Ringed and Bearded seals sunbathing on the ice and maybe even the king of the arctic, the Polar bear. We will work our way up The Esmark glacier, to the glacier plateau of Trollheimen. This is where the pointy peaks of the mountains stick straight out of the glacier as massive nunataks.

During the trip, your guides will manage the daily routines in such a way that everyone gets into the proper expedition rhythm. When this is established everyone will know what to do and how we can help each other. In this way the expedition can really turn into the trip of a lifetime. Due to the fact that this trip mainly consists of cross country skiing on different forms of ice, your guides will use different techniques to ensure safe travel and equipment for travel in areas with crevasses is part of the standard equipment. Equipment for dealing with an unlikely polar bear encounter is also part of the standard equipment. You will also have a lot of time to learn new tricks (or sharpen up old ones) from your guides, who all have long and extensive experience guiding trips in the high Arctic.
