The best things to do in Nepal

Learn more about traveling in Nepal

The little country of Nepal is the home of the biggest mountains in the world and the nature experiences are top notch with classic treks and incredible scenery. But the real treasure of Nepal is the big hearted people, always smiling and friendly and ready to do all they can to welcome you.

When is the best time to visit Nepal?
The peak trekking season is during spring and fall, but both winter and summer are increasing in popularity. If you like festivals, there are some great ones in the fall. The winter provides crystal clear skies and great conditions for low-land trekking. Summer is monsoon season and a good time to consentrate on "rain shadow" areas like Upper Mustang or Nar Phu.

How long should I stay in Nepal.
If you are in to one of the classic treks, 2-4 weeks is recommended. For mountaineering, even longer. But if you want highlights, you can do a lot in 4-7 days. Kathmandu and Pokhara are great destinations for sightseeing. A hike where you can get a good view of the Himalayas, is highly recommended. And you should also consider a jungle safari in either Chitwan or Bardia National Park.

From here the trail goes through steep narrow valley winding through deep forest witnessing the magnificent view of Annapurna II. Crossing the river where the extraordinary curved rock face of Paungda Danda rises abruptly nearly 1500m from the riverbank, the trail climb to the village of Pisang.

Both the options offers the magnificent Mountain View, introduces us to diverse Himalayan lifestyle and set up a strong foundation about the concealed geographical variation of the country. The longer walk will take 8-9hours whereas the shorter takes 5-6hours.

Most of the visitors ascend to a hill situated behind Manang which offers the astonishing view of Annapurna massif and the huge icefall that run into and rumbles down from Gangapurna. From Manang we will make our way towards the base of Thorong La pass. Climbing out of Marshyangdi valley, we turn northwest to the valley of Jarsang Khola. Winding above the forest we pass through arid, alpine land, with scrub juniper and patches of birch to Yak Kharka. We will reach Yak Kharka by afternoon and in the remaining time we can explore the vicinity. Here we can get a occasional glimpse of Blue Sheep which are the local inhabitant of this chilly and breezy area.

Day 11: Trek to Muktinath(3802m)

We will start early in the morning to climb the pass. The initial stage of the ascent is very steep, but as we approach the peak it becomes much sloppier, but the altitude still makes the walk a challenging one. After making our way through few false summits, we finally make it to top of the pass (5416m). The top offers the unexplainable 360 degree panorama of snow capped peaks extending northwards into Tibet. Upon looking back we can view several peaks of Annapurna and in front of us is the unfathomable gorge of Kali Gandaki. After the pass the trail descends gradually but becomes steeper, finally making to a grassy slope, just before easing off to a gradual downhill walk to Muktinath.

Day 12: Trek to Jomsom

After visiting the holy temple of Muktinath, we make our way through arid landscape with the snow clad Himalayas in the backdrop. The trail goes down the valley offering an array of beautiful colors to Kali Gandaki valley at Ekalabatti. An easy walk from here finally brings us to Jomsom.

Day 13: Fly back to Pokhara

Stay Safe
Altitude Sickness: The main and common risk while trekking above about 2500m is Altitude sickness. Altitude sickness is caused by acute exposure to low partial pressure of oxygen at high altitude. The available amount of oxygen to sustain mental and physical alertness decreases with altitude. Available oxygen drops as the air density itself, the number of molecules (of both oxygen and nitrogen) per given volume, drops as altitude increases. So don’t ignore, if you have any symptoms then descending to a lower altitude is the only option.

Water: Have some means to purify water, iodine or a fine ceramic filter are the best options. The streams should be considered polluted and whilst bottled water is often available, the disposal of plastic bottles is a problem.

Electricity in Nepal
Nepal is a developing country, Outside of major cities area electricity on trekking can be scares. You should have to pay 100-800 NRs per hour to charge goods on many lodges and also many tea-house treks, including in Annapurna base camp trek, Everest Base camp trek and many others treks also. Chargers often won't work on low power solar systems you find right up in the mountains so u can buy alternative bayonet light to electricity power plug converter, which will only works in low voltage is highlow. The standard Nepalese electrical outlet is a three-pronged triangle so bring three-pronged triangle chargers.

Nepal Climate information
Nepal is a landlocked country which lies in Hindu Kush Himalayan region. Nepal has monsoonal climate having four main seasons: spring, summer, monsoon, autumn and winter.

Below is a general guide to conditions at different seasons:
January to March (winter): In this season temperature will decrease at often 0°C (32°F) at night, with extreme cold at high elevations. It is possible to trek in places like the Everest region during the winter but due to extreme cold weather and heavy snow fall it may be quite difficult than as usual.
April to June (summer): In these months it is quite warm and dry weather. There is an abundance of blooming flowers in the Himalayas at this time, with rhododendrons, in particular, adding a splash of color to the landscape. This season is the best time to undertake mountain expeditions.
June to September (Monsoon): There will be heavy monsoonal rainfall in this season. Rains are generally lighter in high Himalayan reasons. In this season the mountain ranges are not often visible due to the clouds.
October to December (autumn): These months are cool and clear which is due to the end of monsoon, there is little dust in the air so this is the best season to visit the hilly and mountainous regions.

Nepal Visas information

Respect to Local Peoples
In Nepal, “Namaste” or “Namaskar” is said to an older or high-status person with palms together, figure up. It is used to greet a person in place of goodbye or hello. There is no limitation how many times you say “Namaste” but, it is better if you say once per person, per day. If You want to say “Thank You” then you can say “Dhanyabaad /'ðɅnjɅbɑ:d/ (Dhan-ya-baad)”

BHAKTAPUR DURBAR SQUARE (UNESCO World Heritage Site):
The Bhaktapur quite far from Kathmandu and it is the biggest durbar squire in Kathmandu among all the durbar squires, The 15th century Palace of 55 Carved Windows and the palace entrance, the Golden Gate - a masterpiece in art - have added splendor to this palace square which consists of buildings dating from the 13th century to the 18th century. The Bhaktapur extraordinary Durbar Square with its extraordinary monuments reflects the glory days of the Malla dynasty of Nepal when art and architecture thrived in the three cities of the valley. In front of the palace building are innumerable temples and architectural showpieces like the Lion Gate, the statue of King Bhupatindra Malla mounted on a giant stone pillar and the Batsala Devi Temple. The stone temple of Batsala Devi is full of intricate carvings and is a beautiful example of Shikhara-style architecture. There is a bronze bell on the terrace of the temple, which is also known as the Bell of Barking Dogs. Erected by King Ranjit Malla in 1737, its sounding announced the beginning and end of a daily curfew.

PATAN DURBAR SQUARE (UNESCO World Heritage Site):
Patan Durbar Square is located in the heart of the city and was once the palace of the kings of Patan. The square is an enchanting mélange of palace buildings, artistic courtyards and graceful pagoda temples – a display of Newari architecture that had reached its pinnacle during the reign of the Malla kings. Among its numerous courtyards, the renovated Keshav Narayan Chowk has been converted into a bronze artifact museum. The Sundari Chowk with the sunken bath of Tusha Hiti is a showcase of exquisite woodcarvings, stone and metal sculptures of Nepal. The magnificent Krishna Temple with its 21 gilded spires, built in 1637, and the Manga Hiti, the sunken stone water spout, found in the palace complex are but a few examples of its opulence. The Krishna Temple, built entirely of stone, is said to be the first specimen of Shikhara-style architecture in Nepal.

We will walk about two hours today. From Chukkung we follow the moraines that run from Lhotse (8501m) towards the sand planes at Pareshaya Gyab. We reach Island Base camp in the mid- afternoon from here because the distance is shorter.

Day 17-18: Island peak Climb (6189m)

We will take two days to climb Island peak. Our team leader will decide the plan to climb peaks, considering the group adoption, climate, snow conditions and other factor. Usually, in the morning we take rest and after lunch we climb to High camp 5700m from base camp. It takes around two hours to hike a steep up lush slopes on the well-defined track. The location of the camp is straightly below the stable snowline.

We depart very early for the last climb to summit the next morning. It takes around five hours depending on the climate and snow condition. A rope will be fixed on the summit headwall for safely ascent and descent. Even the climb is not theoretically difficult, the snow slopes are gorged, the headwall is logically steep and head for heights are functional. The scene from the summit is absolutely incredible! Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Makalu and Baruntse are the leading massive a rising above a sea of lesser peaks. We should be able to descend on the path from the summit all the way back to Dingboche.

Day 19-20: Trek to Namche Bazaar through Pheriche - Pangboche – Tengboche

Today we will have the much easier walk, running down the lower elevation following the route of mortal moraines at Dughla and the huge valley of Khumbu River. We have to cross many attractive Sherpa settlements like perch, Orsho and Shomare. We can either walk to the Gompa in upper Pangboche or we can walk regular way to reach Pangboche from where we can descend to Imja River and up by forest to Debuche. We will have our lunch in Tengboche and carry on to walk through Rhododendron and Juniper tree. We will cross over the Bridge of Dudh Koshi River, the trail then chases the Dudh Koshi ravine sliding hastily by pine forest. We will ultimately reach Sansa. We will reach Namche Bazaar within a few hours walk. We can enjoy the last view of Lhotse, the lean of Everest and Tengboche from Namche Bazaar. Then we will take rest and relax at our Lodge in Namche Bazaar.

Day 21: Hike to Lukla

The path sharply descends so we must be controlled and walks slowly and continues our walk. Now we will cross the suspension bridge above the thunderous Dudh Koshi. We have to cross through dense forest and Sherpa villages. Then eventually we will reach Lukla where we can stretch our painful legs and remember all the experiences of the last two weeks. Today we will enjoy the Sherpa culture and relax there.

Day 22 : Fly back to Kathmandu

After the long mountain journey, we will return to Kathmandu today. The Early morning flight takes us to Kathmandu. You can rest and relax the whole day at the hotel. If you want to do some shopping for your family and friends then you can explore Thamel. You can also take help of Actual Adventure guides. Overnight stay in Kathmandu.

Day 23: Departure from Kathmandu

After having Breakfast, you will be free Till Departure. Then you will be taken to Kathmandu Airport by the staff of Actual Adventure. We will always hope to see you again with your family, relative, co-workers and friends.

Mera Peak climbing is a high country adventure and Mera peak is officially the highest trekking peak in Nepal; Mera peak climb is a breathtaking challenge & provides climbers with ... morethe most exciting adventures among most other climbing peaks in Nepal.

It is a tough climb but has often been visited by many adventure seekers, The Mera summit offers amazing views on your clambering to the top.
Mera Peak Climbing is a high-altitude trek and climb and trekkers will need to be physically fit and familiar with the use of an ice-axe, crampons and other climbing equipment. Our ... moreexpert guide will provide instructions to those who need guidance in the use of certain trek equipment for which a program of instruction will be given at Kathmandu or at base camp near Khare which is a part of our Mera peak climbing venture. These training are a useful instructional process only for team members who need it to be familiar with climbing techniques before heading for the exciting summit to Mera Peak. The overall focus is to avoid glitches & ensure that the summit is a wonderful success.

Geographically, Mera peak juts out from the south of Everest & totally captures the isolated valleys of Hinku & Hongku; the ascent is done from the Mera La pass at {5415m/17,766 ft} on the northern face which is a link to the less inhabited valleys of Hongku & Hinku. This is a formidable mountain but one doesn’t need to be a veteran climber to attempt this peak.

It’s a straight forward peak technically but the snow & a whole lot of crevasses tend to consume time as you head up the peak. This peak beckons all seasoned & amateur climbers who dare to dream & love taking up a challenge for that special sense of something achieved. Escape Nepal have designed 18day itinerary for the Mera Peak expedition including your arrival and departure dates plus a cultural day tour in Kathmandu, Mera Peak expedition begins with a scenic flight to the small mountain airstrip at Lukla wonderfully placed right in the heart of the Khumbu region and as we have to cross the Charpate Himal and Zatrwa La Pass, we get enough time for acclimatization around Chutanga at (3,050m).

Once, we are ready then we cross Zatrwa La which lies near Hinku valley. Subsequently, we pass through many unspoiled forests of rhododendron and descend down to the Hinku Khola and follow the river to the north towards upper Hinku. We then finally reach Tangnag, the river valley that offers impressive views of the west face of Mera peak and Peak 43 and we will have some days for necessary acclimatization and once we are ready, we head up to the moraine of the Dig Glacier, and do a steep hike down to Khare at (5,045m); we then set lower base camp at around 5,300m near the 'Mera La' Pass at (5,415m) on the 'Hongku' and again we get some days for acclimatization and explore some of the areas around and move to a high camp on the edge of the Mera Glacier, where we again have time for further acclimatization. From this place we get lovely panoramic views of the east Kangchenjunga, Chamlang, Makalu and Baruntse, to the north Everest and Lhotse, & towards the north east of Ama Dablam, Cho Oyu and Kangtega.

Consequently, if weather conditions are good, we make our summit of Mera and once we finish ascending the summit, we then return to the base camp and subsequently the airport to hop our flight back to Kathmandu.

We then begin walking for 3 to 4 hours due east from Lukla, passing through a number of tiny hamlets before entering thick forest on the hillside below the Kalo Himal Ridge. Be careful to stay with the group & avoid straying in this section as there are many trails leading away from the main path. There are many streams with numerous places for the first camp, all of which are loosely referred to as Chutanga, overnight at basic guest house ot tented camp (A, B, L, and D).

Day 04.
Trek from Chutanga to Thuli Kharka via Zatrawala Pass (4610m.) - 6 hours:After having breakfast, we start our trek and the trek up a steep ascended path to cross Zatrawala Pass. From here you can enjoy the spectacular views of Numbur Himal, Kongdi Ri, Karyolang peak and many other mountains and peaks. Now, you walk along the leveled trail for almost one and half hours and then the trail turns downhill and you trek through this descending path all the way to Thuli Kharka, Overninight at basic lodge or Tented Camp ( A, B, L, D).

Day 05.
Trek from Thuli Kharka to Kothe (4110m.)- 5-6 hours:After having breakfast, we start our trek and to reach Kothe we trek up a steep descending path all the way. En route, we pass forests of juniper, rhododendron and other local vegetation that is common at this altitude. The views you can enjoy hereabouts are of Mera peak, Nauleku peak and many other mountains and peaks, overnight at basic lodge or Tented Camp. ( A, B, L, D).

Day 06.
Trek from Kothe to Tangnang (4356m) - 6 hours:After having breakfast, we start our trek and the trek goes along the banks of a river and find bush on both sides of the banks. The path is a gradual ascent and you can enjoy the views of Kusum Kanguru peak and many more famous mountains, overnight at basic lodge or Tented Camp. (A, B, L, D)

Day 07.
Trek from Tangnang Khare- 5 hours:After having breakfast, we start our trek and we now trek towards the mountain as the trail swings to the east. Our hike up to Khare (5,100m, 16,728ft) lead eastward out of Tangnag and we will pause to climb up the moraine for a view of the unspoiled Sabai Tso glacial lake. A drop in lake level, caused by a recent rupture of the natural dam that held the lake, is clearly visible. From Khare, the beautiful north face of Mera Peak is in plain view and Mera glacier spills steeply down into the valley, overnight at basic lodge or Tented Camp. (A, B, L, D).

Day 08.
Rest day at Khare:This is an acclimatization day as you can prepare yourself for the actual climb of Mera Peak now. This day has been a part of our initial plan to set aside for giving us enough time to acclimatize completely and to enjoy a well earned rest that’s mighty good for our bodies. After we have relaxed truly well, we get more energised to lift up what one would call ‘the true spirit of adventure’, overnight basic lodge or Tented Camp, ( A, B, L, D).

Day 09.
Trek from Khare to Mera La (Pass) (5350m.) and camp:After having breakfast, we will travel a short distance, slowly ascending up onto Mera glacier. The climb is initially steep, but flattens out as you reach the crest of the glacier. You will negotiate a long flat path on top of the glacier as you make your way to the pass, called Mera La (5,400m, 17,710ft). From here, the views are truly awesome. Crevasse fields gently stretch out in front of the pass and you are literally enclosed by a ring of jagged peaks and blue-green glaciers. The remaining route up to the summit of Mera Peak is clearly visible, overnight at Tented Camp. (A, B, L, D).

Day 10.
Trek from Mera La (Pass) to Mera High Camp:Today, you trek a gradual ascending path all the way up to the high camp. The area is almost covered by an ice glacier. The views leave you breathless as you get to enjoy the Everest, Makalu, Baruntse, Kusum Kanguru and many other mountains and peaks all arrayed in an amazing panorama that delights the soul. Moreover, you feel ecstatic by the magnificent views of Mera Glacier, overnight at Tented Camp. (A, B, L, D).

Day 11.
Summit the Mera Peak and return to Khare:The climb to the summit of Mera starts gradually and much will depend on snow and general weather conditions. The central summit will soon appear above the head of a wide glacier flanked by two ridges. We climb the center of this over open snowfields and avoid crevasses. The route then swings south-east, eluding below and to the east of the left-hand ridge before turning back right towards the main summit ridge of Mera peak. We reach this by following a classic snow-ridge to just below the final wall that guards the top. This short steep snow slope is easily climbed but a big push is required to climb the last 50 meters. Your reward, however, is a feeling of rapturous triumph as you survey the brilliant panorama from the summit. After putting our video cameras on overdrive & getting the best pictures on offer besides enjoying the lovely views, we descend by the same route back to our campsite below the Mera La and return to Khara, overnight at basic lodge or tented camp, ( A, B, L, D).

Day 12.
Spare day in case of bad weather: There is no guarantee of weather conditions as the weather in mountain is always uncertain , if the weather favor us then we will summit the peak on planned date and we can again rest this extra day in Khare or we can complete our trek in less than one day or if the weather does not favor us then we will use this extra day and wait for next day to make our climb to the peak, overnight at tented camp, ( A, B, L, D).

Day 13.
Trek from Khare to Kothe – 7-8 hours:After having breakfast, we start our trekking back and today, you hike along a gradual descending path passing through Tangnang. This is a small village and you find yak settlements hereabouts. To reach Kothe you follow the same familiar route. On the way, you pass forests covered with fir, rhododendron and local vegetation. This tells us we are now getting down to lower altitudes, overnight at basic lodge or Tented Camp, ( A, B, L, D),

Day 14.
Trek from Kothe to Thuli Kharka – 6 hours:After having breakfast, we start our trek and today, The trail goes steep up all the way to Zatrabok. On the way you pass through forests and green hills with a lot of greenery all around, overnight at basic lodge or Tented Camp. ( A, B, L, D).

Day 15.

Responsible Tourism
The Wonderful Environment of the Himalayas is also an extremely fragile one. Increasing population density and numbers of travelers threaten the very beauty of Nepal. At Escape Nepal, we are extremely conscious about the environment and aim to minimize our impact as much as possible. As deforestation is one of the greatest environmental threats we face in this region, we do not encourage camp fires and encourage use of kerosene for cooking as an alternative fuel to wood. We also discourage trekkers from using wood-fuelled hot showers in lodges along the way. Many lodges, however, now have solar hot showers, a far more eco-friendly alternative.

Garbage disposal is another major problem and some of the busier trails can, at times, appear strewn with litter for miles. Our staff members are well motivated towards eco-friendly practices. We carry out all our garbage, apart from that which can be safely and easily burnt at the campsite. Our aim is to help protect and preserve this beautiful environment for future generations of trekkers to enjoy and we advise the same to you to keep the garbage on proper site and take return those with you to homes which are Non- biodegradable.

We at Escape Nepal would like to requests the following things and to be a responsible tourist:

Leave only footprints and take only photographs.

Use designated routes, campsites and resting places to reduce trampling and other negative environmental impacts.

Respect local culture and traditions, use home stays, locally owned hotels/ lodges or campsites as much as possible to support the local livelihood.

Avoid/ minimize using firewood. Use common space for heating. Opt for alternatives to minimize deforestation.

Maintain cleanliness and hygiene. Use the litter box locally available. Carry back your own garbage while traveling through ecologically sensitive areas.

Encourage to place mobile toilets at a considerable distance from sources of water, river banks and springs while camping along the river sides.

Use the services of local guides and porters as much as possible to explore more about local environment and culture.

Money spent here will contribute directly to the local livelihood, women’s empowerment and environmental conservation.

Before you begin your journey we request you to abide by the above guidelines in order to safeguard the nature and culture of the area and be a responsible tourist.
