PRISON ISLAND
Take a local dhow ride to this beautiful small island just 30 to 40 minutes offshore from Stone Town. The crystal clear waters and fantastic views of Stone Town from the sea make the boat ride very enjoyable. This historical island was used for the confinement of slaves in the late 1800’s, and a quarantine station for lepers victims for Zanzibar and the mainland. The jail itself was built in 1893. A brief tour of the prison is informative and affords fantastic photographic opportunities.

Now it is more commonly known as the home of Giant Alderman Tortoises colony, that were imported from Seychelles in the late 19th century, some of which are over a hundred years old! You have the opportunity to feed and pet the tortoises. You may take a stroll through the forested interior where you will see a wide variety of birds, colorful peacocks, bats, and beautiful butterflies. Keep your eyes peeled too for the shy and elusive Dickers – an unusual tiny antelope species.

It is fringed with a beautiful coral reef, ideal for snorkeling, and has a lovely white beach to sunbathing. This tour is a great way to learn some history and wildlife, and also to see Stone Town from the sea as many old maritime legends would have done.

CITY TOUR
This is a walking tour that takes you almost 3 hrs in the narrow streets through this colorful and alternating city with our tour knowledgeable tour guide, where history appears to stand still. With visits to the House of Wonders, the former slave market for East African slave trade, and the Arab Fort. The architectural style of Stone town buildings is a unique mixture of various influences and culture.

There is a lot of carved wooden doors in Stone Town. At last count in Zanzibar, these doors were 560. The oldest door discovered in Zanzibar is dated AD 1694. When a house was built in Zanzibar, the door was traditionally the first part to be erected. The greater the wealth and social position of the owner of the house.

You will see Zanzibar’s bustling market (opened 1904), where you can see and buy tropical fruits and spices. From there the tour takes you to the Anglican Church built by Bishop Steers in 1874 on the site of old slave market. You will see a tiny and dingy room where slaves were kept before reaching the auction table.

Stone Town has some excellent gifts shops with plenty of souvenirs and handicrafts to choose from. The City Tour is very flexible and can be adapted suit your interest and time frame.
