We are inviting you to a rarely paddled stretch of Lofoten, the wild West coast and populated East coast of Moskenes Island. This is a once a year trip.
The West coast of Moskenes is remote, isolated and rarely paddled. With two experienced guides we are bringing you to this amazing location in summer 2017. Together we will experience ... morethe raw and untouched nature the West coast has on offer, we will explore sea caves and dry caves (if conditions allow it). We will see eagles, seals, fish and a myriad of birds living in an environment rarely visited by mankind.
The West coast of Moskenes Island is remote and isolated, so our participants need to meet certain standards. There are no roads and a very limited phone/radio coverage. The weather will decide if we go for plan A or plan B. Safety comes first and in Lofoten the weather is always the deciding factor.
We require that you have passed a 3 star sea kayak course (teknikkurs from NPF, 3 star BCU or equivalent). Alternatively you must have sufficient experience to paddle in 3 star conditions (1,25 meter waves, 8 m/s wind). Furthermore you must know how to land a sea kayak in surf so some surfing experience will be essential. There may be surf conditions on our landing beaches and surf zones are relatively high risk areas.
We also ask that you are a contributing member of the group. We need all the members of the group to contribute where they can, whether at sea or on land. We will be isolated and it’s therefore important that everyone assist each other whenever possible.
Lastly, the conditions can be rough on the West coast. If we deem the conditions too demanding we will go for our plan B. You must however be prepared and able to paddle and camp under rough conditions; high winds and big waves.
How to get there
There are several ways to arrive at Ballstad. The easiest way is airtravel via Bodø (www.sas.com or www.norwegian.com) and connect with a Viderø flight (www.wideroe.no) to Leknes airport. Leknes have several arrivals with good connections from Bodø airport.
If sea travel is more convenient, Hurtigruten (www.hurtigruten.com/no/norskekysten/) is a good alternative as it arrives at the local village of Stamsund at 19.00 and the south direction departures at 22.30. If you travel by car, the ferry (http://www.torghatten-nord.no/english/) from Bodø to Moskenes (Å) is a good alternative. Several departures a day.
2 nights of accommodation at Hattvika Lodge.
Two experienced guides
2 BBQ dinners at Hattvika Lodge
Kristoffer Vandbakk from Kajakk Nord, 5 star guide and coach (NPF 5 and BCU 4). Kristoffer has 4 years of experience as a sea kayak guide and instructor. He has done multiple trips to the West coast of Moskenes and has incident management and first aid in remote areas skills.
Matt Skuse is a former Mountain Leader in the British Royal Marines with extensive experience in remote and challenging wilderness environments. He has a deep respect for nature and is passionate about low trace outdoor activity. Matt is a BCU 4 Star sea Kayak Leader, BCU 5 star Canoe Leader and a UKCC Level 3 coach.
15 July, arrival at Hattvika Lodge, BBQ dinner and briefing. Accommodation at Hattvika Lodge.
16 July, the paddling starts from Ramberg to Kvalvika, 12 km.
17 July, Kvalvika to Bunes, 17 km.
18 July, Bunes to Lofotodden, 22 km.
19 July, Lofotodden to Reinefjord, 22 km.
20 July, Reinefjord to Ramberg, 22 km. Pickup by car from Ramberg to Hattvika Lodge, BBQ dinner, shower and a soft bed at Hattvika Lodge.
21 July, departure from Hattvika Lodge by 15:00.
Details of plan A:
Arrival at Hattvika Lodge before 18.00. We meet up and get to know each other. We go to Lofotsenteret in Leknes for some shopping (fuel, food and whatever else you need). The briefing starts at 18.00. We then enjoy an evening BBQ and relax at Hattvika Lodge.
We drive to Ramberg and begin the paddle to Kvalvika. There are sea caves to explore, in our kayaks, just before Kvalvika. Distance to paddle: 12 km.
Kvalvika to Bunes. The wild West coast of Moskenes all day. Distance to paddle: 17 km. We arrive at Bunes beach and camp here. There is mobile telephone and radio coverage a 20 minutes hike from the beach.
Bunes to Lofotodden. We will paddle by several caves. If we can, we will explore a cave on foot (Otervikhula), there are 2-3000 years old paintings in some of the caves on the west coast. We arrive at Lofotodden where we will paddle in the Mosken tidal current. There is mobile and radio coverage at this campsite. Distance to paddle: 22 km.
We paddle in or near the Mosken tidal current (depending on the conditions) and pass the most Southern point on the island towards Reine. Reinefjord is one of the most picturesque areas in Lofoten, we will find a suitable campsite there. There is mobile telephone and radio coverage on the whole East coast. Distance to paddle: 22 km.
Reinefjord to Ramberg, through the Sund tidal current, where we will be picked up and driven back to Hattvika Lodge for another great BBQ, a hot shower and comfortable bed.
Breakfast and departure from Hattvika Lodge by 15:00.
Details of plan B:
If conditions on the West coast are too demanding at the start of the trip, we will go for plan B which begins on the east coast of Moskenes with the aim of circumnavigating the island in the reverse order of plan A.
We like the term “leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but photographs”. We will bring out all garbage with us. Campfires will be made on a bed of rocks to leave no trace. We will bring a small shovel to to dig small holes and cover any human waste.
Travel insurance is always recommended. You are responsible for having the appropriate accident and travel insurance for sea kayaking on a remote coastline for several days. Call your insurance agency if in doubt. We recommend booking a return flight from Lofoten which includes cancellation insurance.
When planning a fairly challenging sea kayak trip such as this, we have to plan for the worst and hope for the best. Below we have described known risks and how to avoid and deal with them.
On the west coast there are several landing spots. This includes Kvalvika, Horseid, Bunes, Gjerdvika, Turtnbakkvika, Refsvika and Hell. These are all sand beaches (except Hell which is a sheltered bay) and therefore preferable to organising a rock landing. If we need to land we will, if possible, attempt landing at one of these places.
It is possible to hike on foot to the populated east coast from Kvalvika, Horseid and Bunes. From Bunes it is possible to spend a day carrying all equipment from the beach to the sheltered Reinefjord on the east coast. From Hell it is possible to hike to Å, but this is a very long and steep hike. It is also possible to hike from Stokkvika to the east coast, however the landing in Stokkvika is rocky.
If emergency rescue is required, the group should contact emergency services. This can be done at any of the mobile/radio service points marked on the map. Other than the marked points, there is no mobile or radio contact on the west coast of Moskenes. The whole east coast has mobile and radio contact.
If there is a need to evacuate an injured person or the entire group we will land and walk out or if this is not possible, contact emergency services. Equipment will be secured on land for pickup at a later stage.
Each of the group must be prepared to tow another paddler. Everyone must have a tow rope and everyone must also know how to use it.
If you capsize you should be able to either self rescue or roll. Partner rescues are the second line of defence.
If a paddler capsizes in his or her kayak and exits the kayak, a recovery can be performed by a member of the group. Everyone must be able to perform a buddy rescue so that the person gets back into the kayak.
In the unlikely event of resuscitation being required, the casualty will be moved to land if possible or raft up to provide a suitable platform.
Group control: Line of sight between the group members is to be maintained. If you leave the group on purpose you are no longer considered a part of the arranged guided trip, until you return to the group.
If conditions are too rough the group may be forced to remain in camp until conditions improve.
If an emergency occurs and the group or part of the group has to cancel the guided trip, no refund will be given.
By joining this guided tour you accept the risks described in this document; the risks involved in sea kayaking and the risks of being on an isolated coastline over several days.

We have three versions of this trip
A very simple excursion which we like to define as a beautiful walk immersed in the nature surrounding Svolvær. A soothing walk to enjoy the silence, while admiring extraordinary scenery and landscapes.
The walk lasts approximately 2 hours
The second option is slightly more demanding. We will walk along a path which hugs a stunning mountain lake, and passes through green fir tree forests.
The walk lasts approximately 3 hours.
We travel to the western coast or we walk through high peaks and follow a path which has the ocean on one side and the imposing mountains on the other. Departure from Svolvær. The path we have chosen is about one hour by car from Svolvær.
The walk lasts approximately 5 hour, transport included.
An experienced guide will accompany you during the tour.
We will offer you energetic snacks during the excursion.

We want to dedicate these hours together by visiting the most ancient and striking villages of some enchanting Islands. Svolvær, Kabelvåg, and Henningsvær represent ... morea traditional way of life here on the Islands. Kabelvåg is a village of extreme historical interest, not to mention rare natural beauty. Along the road which takes us to Kabelvåg, we will first stop to admire and photograph the ancient Cathedral of the Lofoten Islands. The Cathedral was built at the end of the ... more19th century, and could hold up to 1200 people. It is the second cathedral in Norway to be entirely built of wood.
Continuing on to Kabelvåg, we visit the ancient village.
We will take you to explore this small village, to admire its architectural beauty, its history, and the amazing landscapes which combine sea and mountain peaks. The excursion is on foot, and there will be many opportunities to photograph this enchanting small village.
Next stop Henningsvær.
The road which leads to Henningsvær is of rare beauty. During the journey, we will see high mountains with jagged peaks, the crystal clear water of this splendid sea, the fine sand, as soft as talcum powder, and colours and scenes of extraordinary beauty.
Henningsvær has always been a village filled with life and colour. The old houses of the fishermen, and the tradition of fishing have remained the same, even with the passing of centuries.
Today, the main activity is still fishing, and the typical wooden drying racks are the proof of this. We’ll visit the prettiest streets, crossing bridges which connect the small islands.
You will be accompanied by our guide.
This tour is dedicated to those who love photography. We will discover the most enchanting spots of this amazing archipelago and it´s striking and unforgettable light.
Lofoten Islands is a small archipelago situated 200 kilometres above the Polar Circle. The Arctic lights and colours, and the natural contrasts of this amazing land make these islands ... morea perfect place to take unique and unrepeatable pictures. During the trip, we will search for the best light and best locations. Inhabited since the Viking age, these islands offer unique spots, breath-taking and majestic nature, unforgettable places, steep peaks which rise directly from the sea, white sand beaches and a sea so blue that it is hard to believe that you are in the Arctic.
During this daily tour we will visit the Atlantic side, the wildest side where nature shows its purest and untamed side. Eggum and its colourful wooden houses, the beauty of Haukland beach and its tropical aspect, Unstad, known as a real paradise for surfers, are just some of the natural beauties that these islands offer. But Lofoten islands are history, culture, and folklore as well and we want you to be a part of their past history. Visiting these ancient fishing hamlets is a moment of knowledge and both historical and cultural discovery.
The fantastic fishing villages of Kabelvåg, Henningsvær remind us of a glorious past; Henningsvær and its interesting and picturesque architecture, Kabelvåg and the importance of fishing during the Middle Ages are just some of the beauties you can enjoy by visiting this archipelago. All these historical sites, together with the beauty of nature and the power of the lights will capture your eyes and your imagination.
The duration of the excursion varies according to the lights. The tour can last 7 up to 9 hours depending on your wishes. Our guide will guide you to the most enchanting places and you will have time to take pictures, to admire, “to breathe in” the Arctic atmosphere. We want you to discover the Lofoten archipelago, its enchanting hidden corners, powered by nature and lights.
Being a special tour, which concentrates on details, its duration can vary, from 7 up to 9 hours according to the weather forecasts and the light; we want you to have all the time you need to enjoy and take fantastic pictures.
Amazing nature, unique light, and a complex history is what makes these islands known all over the world. More and more famous photographers and artists gather up here to catch the beauty of them. The magnificent arctic lights have inspired and continue to inspire artists from all over the world.
Number of guests
This is an excursion suitable for individual guests and therefore the maximum number of participants is 6.
A higher number would not allow the perfect success of this photographic experience.
With this tour, which lasts about six hours, we want our visitors to see the most spectacular locations that these Islands offer, both natural, historical, and cultural.
It will be possible for you to sit on pure white beaches facing a crystal sea, to admire imposing mountains which for billions of years have guarded, like ancient Viking warriors, ... moremagnificent cliffs where the waves of the North Sea break.
You will smell the scent of that same sea, united with the perfume of arctic flowers. At the same time, you might also visit archaeological sites which tell the story of the Viking population, and the origins of this land.
Walk amongst the old “Rorbu” (old fishermen’s houses) in the different, colourful villages of the islands.
You will also have the chance to taste the various typical products of these islands, while sitting in some characteristic local restaurants.
With this excursion, we would like to take you to discover these islands; we will not only visit some of the characteristic fishing villages which have made these islands famous, and are appreciated all over the word, but we’ll also take you to explore unspoilt nature, the most genuine and extraordinary part of this beautiful archipelago.
We will guide you through Kabelvåg, and we will visit the ancient fishing village, with plenty of time to take many beautiful photos.
Continuing our journey, we head towards the western part of the islands, in the direction of Eggum. Eggum faces the ocean, and here nature expresses herself with all her extraordinary strength and beauty. Eggum has become famous in the last few years for its amazing light. It is the best location to catch the authentic atmosphere of the North Sea.
We then continue to the stunning Utakleiv and its unforgettable views. The mountains will be at our backs, and the crystal sea, the white sand, silence, “genuine” nature… it will be difficult to believe that we are 200km above the Arctic Circle as we gaze upon nature of such lush and varied colours. The beaches of Haukland were defined in Time magazine as one of the most beautiful locations in the world. We will then carry on to Unstad, which is a small spot with a handful of little houses perched at the foot of the mountains, from where we can admire the striking seascape.
You will enjoy history and culture, together with unbelievable panoramas.
An excursion to feed your eyes with the snowy-white crests of the waves. You’ll paddle on waters that mix and match continuously creating white sandy beaches, a wonderful gift of nature. ... moreYour eyes will be drawn towards the beauty and wonder of these lands, so extreme that they draw life from the very essence of nature. An experience that should never be missed by a true lover of kayaking. One of our staff will take you to Henningsvær, about 25 kilometers from Svolvær, where you will meet our guide, Peter, who will teach you the secrets of kayaking and introduce you ... moreto our beautiful coastline. A break is scheduled on a small beach where you can enjoy a good hot coffee.
After kayakking, you will enjoy a short guided tour. The guide will bring you to the nicests and most interesting sposts. The walk will take about 1 hour and you will enjoy the beauty and colors of these fantastic fishing village. Possibility of taking pictures and relax.
Join is on a hunt for the "Rainbow of the Night" - the Aurora Borealis!
The symbols of the Aurora Borealis were found on the Shamans’ drums of the Sami population. In their language, the phenomenon has many different names, for example, Sami traditionally ... moreassociate the Aurora Borealis with sounds. During the Viking era, the Aurora Borealis were thought to be the armour of the Valkyrie, the virgin warriors, which gave off the strange sparkling light.
We like to call it “The Rainbow of the Night” because sometimes the lights appear all at once, dancing through the sky in shades of purple, orange, green and red.
The Aurora Borealis is always different, and to see it is an exciting, magical moment..With the excursion we propose, you’ll become spectators of one of the most incredible phenomenon of our planet.
During our safari, we will walk among silent forests, frozen lakes and old fishing hamlets.
We will try to find the best spots to admire the “Queen”, the Aurora Borealis and, according to the solar activity, we will change place and point of observation. That is why we call this excursion “hunting the lights”. The excursion itself will be an enchanting experience and when your desire to observe the inspiring northern lights will be fulfilled , you will understand why then aurora, nordlys in Norwegian, is considered the most incredible natural phenomenon you can assist.

During Winter whales and killer whales gather in the Norwegian sea to feed. It is a spectacular show. The orcas, the biggest of the dolphins, are social and playful so this sea safari ... morewill be an exciting experience. Living in a matriarchal society, it is very common to meet killer whales in big groups; males, females and calves together traveling, feeding, resting or socialising. Socialising is ... morea moment of joy and happiness and you will be the spectator of one the most interesting and joyful moment of these creatures’ life.
Being the norwegian sea biologically very productive, it is the perfect winter feeding ground for many other whales as well. The Humpback whales are very common in these waters in wintertime. Huge and social, it is a real pleasure to encount them while swimming. Big cetaceans need deep waters to dive and killer whales feed mostly on herring. That is the two reasons why both can be observed in Andenes, Vesterålen archipelago.
Where do we go?
Andenes is about 200 kilometres north of Svolvær and it takes about 3 hours by car and ferry to reach it one way.
We can consider this transport a good and unique opportunity to get a general idea of an another area further north. The guide will give you all the information and, if possible, we will try to do our best to take some unexpected pictures.
We organize the safari by RIB boat (rigid inflatable boat, 12 seats). It is s an “Arctic Experience” you will never forget.
There are approximately 75 species of whales in Norway, where they are a part of the marine ecosystem of the North Sea. They either eat fish, or they compete with fish for their food. ... moreMost whales need to eat the equivalent of approximately five per cent of their body weight every day. They are beautiful and gentle giants. The North Sea is a very rich food source. Here whales can feed all year round; these waters are the perfect habitat for many types of cetaceans such as sperm whales, humpback whales, ... morepilot whales, minke whales, fin whales and killer whales.
In summer time the Norwegian sea is populated mostly by sperm whales. They spend the summer in the cold Atlantic waters before starting their migration towards warmer waters again in the autumn.
The whales are gentle marine mammals and observing them is a moment of joy and beauty. The Sperm whales are huge mammals and they need deep waters to dive.
Where do we go?
To observe these fantastic creatures, we have to transfer to Andenes in the Vesterålen Islands.
Andenes is about 200 kilometres from Svolvær and it is the best place to spot and admire these gigantic, but gentle creatures.
It takes about 3 hours to reach Andenes from Svolvær. This is good opportunity to drive all along this small archipelago called Vesterålen.
We like to define this excursion as a fantastic and complete experience. You will experience a new archipelago and its amazing landscape and the joy of seeing the whales in their own environment.
